Parents of pupils at Sabon Layi Primary School in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State have expressed their concerns over the poor state of the school’s infrastructure.
Lateefatu Jibrin, a mother of four children at the school, shared her frustration during a media tour, revealing that the pupils are forced to sit on the bare floor, using rags as makeshift seats. She appealed to the state government to take urgent action to address the issue, saying, “Our children go to school with rags to sit on the bare floor.”
Abdulrahman Idris, another parent with three children at the school, lamented the daily struggle of washing and pressing their children’s uniforms, only to see them torn when they sit on the floor. “We parents are not happy with this development. It’s frustrating to see our children’s uniforms get torn despite our best efforts to keep them clean,” he said.
The headmaster of the school, Auwalu Badu, confirmed that the school has not received furniture, despite receiving other resources such as books and chalk. He said, “We have 18 classes, but only three have chairs. We are still waiting for furniture, even after the Governor declared a state of emergency on education.”
Badu also highlighted other challenges facing the school, including erosion problems that make the school inaccessible during rainfall, and dilapidated toilets that have been in disrepair since 2011.
Parents and the headmaster are now calling on the state government to take immediate action to address these issues and provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils.
Governor Abba Yusuf, upon assuming office, declared a state of emergency in the education sector to restore the lost glory of schools in the state.
